Types of present tense




The tense of English grammar is a very important subject. If tense is well learned then speaking English will be an advantage. It is very important for everyone to know the tense. There are three types of tenses. Present tense, past tense and future tense. We will discuss only the present tense in this post.




Q: What is present tense?

A: The present tense is a form of verb which is used to denote a work which is currently being done or is being done. Let me give you some examples:




1. He works at office.

2. He goes to school every day.

3. He is playing cricket with his friends.

4. He is doing of his office important work.

5. They are singing together.



These are examples of present tense. Again, there are four parts to the present tense. These are discussed below:

#1 Present indefinite tense or simple present tense: Present indefinite tense refers to the work that is currently being done.

Examples:

1. They work at shop.

2. We play cricket in the evening.

In case of present indefinite tense, if the subject is a third-person singular number, then S or ES is added at the end of the verb. If the sentence is negative then examples will be :

1. I do not use mobile.

2. He does not like football.

If the sentence is interrogative then examples will be:

1. Does he like me?

2. Do they like to see movies?

If the sentence with negative and interrogative then examples will be:

1. Do they not go to school?

2. Does he not like chess?

#2 Present continuous tense: Present continuous tense refers that any work currently in progress. Examples:

1. He is doing his job.

2. They are going to that place.

If the sentence is negative then examples will be:

1. I am not playing cricket.

2. They are coming here.

If the sentence is interrogative then examples will be:

1. Is he playing guitar?

2. Are they going to their house?

If the sentence with negative and interrogative then examples will be:

1. Is he not like painting?

2. Are you not happy?

#3 Present perfect tense: Present perfect tense means that any work has just ended but its results still exist. Examples:

1. I have completed this project.

2. You have achieved their respect.

If the sentence is negative then examples will be:

1. I have not completed my work.

2. You have not gone there.

If the sentence is interrogative then examples will be:

1. Has he liked the dress?

2. Have you thought about that?

If the sentence with negative and interrogative then examples will be:

1. Has he not called you?

2. Have you not done your duty?

#4 Present perfect continuous tense: Present Perfect Continuous tense means any work started in the past and is still going on. Examples:

1. I have been playing piano for an hour.

2. He has been reading in this school for six years.

In case of negative sentence:

1. She has not been singing since morning

In case of interrogative sentence:

1. Has he been playing guitar since morning?

In case of negative-interrogative sentence:

1. Has he not been reading in this school for five years?
